We are the stories we tell ourselves

You are likely to know Shekhar Kapur,  as the director of Elizabeth I and II. At this TED conference, he discusses the importance of stories in our lives.

Particularly poignant statements:

We are the stories we tell ourselves. In this universe and this existence, where we live with this duality of whether we exist or not and who are we, the stories we tell ourselves are the stories that define the potentialities of our existence.

A person without a story does not exist. I tell a story and therefore I exist.

Ultimately whats a story? Its a contradiction. Everything is a contradiction. The universe is a contradiction. And all of us are constantly looking for harmony.

While you may not live in a fairy world like I do at times, this talk really reveals a side to being human that very few attempt to actualize.

Why Schools Kill Creativity

This is probably my favourite TED Talk. in 20 minutes, Sir Ken Robinson details everything what is wrong with the education and gives some interesting ideas on what could be changed.

Even if you do not agree with his views, the anecodotes itself are worth the watch.

Choice Excerpts:

Teacher approaches girl in art class and asks what she is drawing. “Im drawing a picture of God.” Teacher says, “Nobody knows what God looks like.” Girl: “They will know in a minute.”

If you are not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original.

Picasso once said that all children are born artists. The problem is to remain an artist once we grow up.
