Music sustains me and lifts me up in ways that I really cant describe.
So it should be no surprise that RIP: A Remix Manifesto - movie by the National Film Board of Canada – really struck a chord (pun completely intended). Its basically about the remixing scene; more specifically, the fight between the recording industry and artists who use the music of other people to make their own creations [aka copy(left)]. In an hour and a half the movie lays to rest a lot of arguments put out by music companies as to why the intellectual property status quo should remain.
Im not going to extensively review the film and the arguments it proffers. However I will say that movie makes a very good case regarding the truth of the Remix Manifesto.
Culture always builds on the past
The past always tries to control the future
Our future is becoming less free
To build free societies you must limit the control of the past
